Damon's Injury

Today I picked Damon up early to take him to see his dad for the weekend. When I got to his school the class was taking a bathroom break so they were all standing in a line in the hallway...Damon was crying. I went over to him and asked what was wrong. After getting no response from him I looked at his teacher and asked what happened? Damon is not a cry baby so I knew something was up. The teacher told me he got hurt on the playground-a kid accidentally poked him in the eye. I asked Damon to show me his eye and he couldn't open in. I explained that I needed to see his eye and that he needed to open it for me. The only way that he could do that was to pry it open with his own hands and at that point I knew it wasn't good. When he finally got his eye opened he would scream with pain, close his eye and put his hand over it. Now Damon doesn't usually have to go to the doctors except for the occasional sick visit which is maybe once a year and then of course for his yearly child's check up. After calling about three doctors offices I was finally able to get a doctor that could see him today...it was however 3:30 so I was very lucky to get an appointment that wasn't at the urgent care or the emergency room. I just loathe those places.

When waiting for the doctor in the exam room I try to keep Damon's anxiety down so I get the tongue depressors and sword fight with him, then I'll get a glove and blow it up into a small balloon. When the doctor came in Damon of course got very chatty with nervousness and started telling the doctor random facts like:

"My mom always drops her stick (tongue depressor)"
"I'm going to see my dad today"
"I had wacky dress day"

Poor thing! I explained to the doctor what happened at school and he said okay Damon I'm going to make you feel better. I need to look at your eye but after he opened it and Damon let out a yelp, he looked at me and said "we need to numb his eye". Ugh! Damon heard that and freaked out as the doctor got the eye drops out. I literally had to lay my body over him and hold his head while the doctor pulled his eye open and put the drops in. You could tell Damon felt immediate relief as he stopped screaming and just laid there. Next the doctor had to scrape his eye and put dye in it. I could not watch it so I just held Damon's hand, talked to him, and looked the other way. The doctor then turned the lights out and put a blue light on and said "Yep, Damon has a corneal abrasion." He then let me look and I got to see the small hole in his eye. It was pitiful. The good news is it's not severe enough that a few drops a day can't help. Damon sat up and the doctor said "See Damon, I told you I would make you feel better." Damon looked at him and said "I know that but do not do it again." The doctor then whispered to me "the numbing will wear off in a few hours and he's going to be hurting again." That broke my heart.

We left, got our stickers and suckers, and met Damon's dad in the parking lot. Since it was a minor injury I was okay with Damon leaving me for the weekend. I always like to be with him when he is sick but he really wanted to go with his Dad and I was happy to let him...I don't have to put the drops in his eyes this weekend!

I asked Drew to put a patch on Damon's eye if he goes outside or if any kids or animals are around him and while he sleeps. I didn't want to take a chance on it getting worse or irritated.

Wacky Day...and it was!

Wacky Day!!!

Today Damon's school had a Dress Wacky Day. Damon and I didn't really have to talk much about it. He went in his room and picked out what he wanted to wear. As I was getting dressed for work he comes in my room and says "hey ma, look." He was wearing his Soccer pajama shirt, green sweat pants that were too small, green army socks and his black cowboy boots. It was very interesting to see his own definition of "Wacky Wear". After being in his boots for a few minutes in the house he realized they would hurt his feet if he wore them all day so he decided to put on his blue and white tie died crocks...perfect. :) To top it off he put is Geico hat on sideways and a small pilots jacket. I love it! I think this is something he would probably wear everyday if I let him completely pick out his own outfit everyday...thank goodness for uniforms.

Damon and his music

Damon has always been a musical child dancing, singing, playing instruments, beat boxing etc. I would like to take credit for that as our life together has been one big musical. We sing in the morning, during the day, and at night. We both dance to the rhythm of our own beat and let me tell you Damon doesn't miss a beat!

Damon has never really been interested in the kids music-you know ring around the rosie, old McDonald, Itsy Bitsy Spider etc. He and I listen to random music depending on the mood we are in.

He amazes me with how quickly he can pick up the words to songs like Pinks "Sober", Queens "We will rock you", Billy Joel's "My life", Flo Rida's "In the Ayer" and his most recent one All American Rejects "Gives You Hell". Tonight at dinner while I was clearing the table Damon busted out with: "When you look at my face hope it gives you hell, hope it gives yooouuu hellll." That is not exactly the words but he was very close and he had the tune and rhythm down. It was pretty awesome.

The funny thing is he has only heard that song once or twice because it has only played on the radio, it's not something I have on a cd and play for him over and over. I don't necessarily like the fact that he says hell but you know what, I don't have a problem with him using inappropriate words so I feel like it is okay for him to sing it in a song...on the occasion.

New Bike Safety Gear

It became apparent to me, now that Damon is learning to ride his bike without training wheels, it might be a good thing to get him a helmet that wasn't 3 sizes too big and decorated in Dale Junior crap...I mean thanks mom and dad!

It was time to test out the new gear. Damon was so excited to wear it because he felt like a big boy.

I have to help him get started and it has been a few months since he has ridden his bike so he was a little rusty. Now that it is nice outside we should have him riding by himself before the end of June. We'll see...

Today was a long day and Damon was exhausted. He fell asleep in the car on the way home which was around 7:00 p.m.

Oh and guess who the lucky person was that got to carry him up two flights of stairs in a dress and heels?...Me!

Arts and Crafts

Please let me first apologize for the long posts. I have yet to figure out how to do a slide show which would make this a lot easier to view. Any who...

Today Damon and I met my cousin and her son at the Cornelius Arts Center where they were having arts and crafts for the kids. We got there about 30 minutes early because I wasn't sure if parking was going to be scarce but we kind of got front row. The next few pictures are random shots I took of Damon as we were waiting for the festivities to start.

He posed himself and put his hat on crooked...not me.

I know what you're thinking...is he doing...no he can't be... Don't worry he's not. We were flicking a bottle cap in the air and catching it. I told you we were trying to waste some time. I hate to say but he's got the K-fed motif going on...don't you think?

Well look who we ran into first, Mrs. Clown! It's funny because the guys are not scared of the clown but they definitely kept their distance...

Of course nothing like a good balloon sword fight...typical.

The first station we stopped at was the pirate hat station. To try this at home please follow these steps: lol ; )

First take a regular newspaper and let the kids draw on it. As you can see Damon chose a black crayon. It might be wise for your child to use a colored crayon as the newspaper is generally black and white.

Secondly put the newspaper over your child's head. Make sure it doesn't blow off once, twice or three times.

Then you put your child in a headlock and put a strip of tape around your child's head.

Lastly you fold the sides of the news paper up and voila...a pirates hat. It was no time before that pirates hat became a ball of trash on my car floorboard.

How convenient...the next station was right behind us. It was the "paint a random hat" station. Damon decided to pain his hat red...the entire thing red!

Literally 30 minutes later Damon had completed his red hat and we hung it up to dry.

Next was the "wash your hands before you get it all over your clothes" station.

We got out of the sun for a bit to go inside and make kites and pictures.

On our way out we stopped and watched a skit the local acting school put together. It was kind of cute.

Morning Conversations

Most mornings Damon crawls into bed with me until it's time to wake. During the week we don't really get to lounge around because we have to get up and get ready for work and school. Weekends however is a different story...

Here are some of the things we talked about in bed this morning:

Damon: Good Morning Mommy.
Me (just waking up): Good Morning Babe.
Damon: Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to you.(rubbing my face)
Me: What would happen to me?
Damon: Bad guys but don't worry I won't let anything happen to you.
Me: Oh, well, I won't let anything happen to you either.
Damon: No mommy I won't let anything happen to you because I'll beat the bad guys up.
Me: Oh I'm sorry, thank you babe.
Damon (flexing his arm muscles): Do I have strong muscles.
Me (feeling his arms): Wow Damon! You do have strong muscles.
Damon (smiling): I know.

Damon: Can you do this? (making noises with his mouth and tongue)
Me (pretending that I can't):No.
Damon: Let me show you. (Now using his hands to mold my mouth the way he does to make the noise)
Me (trying it again and doing it this time)
Damon: You're doing it mom! That is so good. I am so proud of you.

Damon: Mom you have a little mustache.
Me: Uh...I guess I need to wax huh?
Damon: You don't have a big one like a boy but you have a little one.
Me: Oh lord, I'm embarrassed. (covering my hand with my mouth)
Damon: I'm just kidding you don't have one.

I love our morning time together. It is the one time throughout the day we are not moving, no distractions, talking soft, and being completely patient with each other. I would love to be able to do that throughout the day...but then how would you get anything accomplished? ;)

Easter Day Picnic

Damon was with his Dad this Easter weekend therefore Damon and I celebrated Easter the weekend before. My family in the Mountains (Sandee, Samantha, Jeremy, Gabe, Casey, Haley, Madison, and of course "mom") invited me up for a picnic at the park. It take about an hour to get there so this morning I packed some picnic stuff and headed up the road. We met at 1:00 this afternoon but I didn't get Damon back until 3:30. By that time his cousins had to leave so they really didn't get to play together. We still had tons of fun!

Damon hugging his Gee Gee's.

Damon and Casey. Casey by the way, is such an awesome kid! He's so sweet and so much fun to be around.

My family commented on Damon's athleticism and said he got it from me. Then they asked him who taught him to throw the ball and he says his DAD. What?!?! Let me tell you; Damon and I play sports every single day. I taught him how to do pretty much all of it. Since it is just him and I, there is no way I can get pictures of us playing so my wonderful cousin took the opportunity to take some pictures of us playing...for proof!

Check out the arm on that kid! Such great form!

Teaching Damon something...not really sure what though. :)

We took a break from sports so Damon could just play in the sand. Can you tell he was enjoying himself?

We had such a great time. I love seeing my family. Thank you all for the invitation. We LOVE You! HAPPY EASTER!

Easter Egg Hunt

Around 1:30 Damon and I headed out to Mecklenburg Park for the annual Easter Egg Hunt! This was our first year attending so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I was definitely not prepared to be around the hundreds of people that were there. It was a really nice thing for the community. They had rides, games, bouncy houses, slides, animals, cookie decorating, Easter Bunny, Big Dogs, and a Clown...all for FREE!

Damon and I got there early enough to get a great parking spot and he headed straight for the human sized dogs. He gave a hug and got a piece of candy.

Next stop...the bouncy house/slide.

We got to pet the different animals they had there (Lamas, goats, pigs, and something with a horns).

We then headed to the swing ride. The line was long but went relatively fast considering they didn't give a very long ride. While Damon was on the ride my parents arrived and surprised him as he got off.

It was kind of funny because Damon's swing was the only one going seated backwards as every other swing was facing the outside towards the crowd...poor thing.

Next he wanted to do the big slide but standing in another long line was not interesting enough for Damon so I saved his spot while he did a few laps around the baseball field.

It was time for him to go down the slide and do it by himself. It was pretty high up and I was actually surprised he did it by himself but he was all for it.

We took a break while he played on the playground and then he ate a Popsicle that grandpa bought for him.

It was time to head down for the Easter Egg Hunt but before that we had to decorate our cookies. I didn't actually decorate mine as much as I just ate it plain.

They broke up the Easter Egg Hunt into ages so Damon was with the 4-6 year olds. While we were waiting for them to blow the starting whistle we ran into an old friend of Damon's from his previous school. Her name is Raven...in fact...I think she was mentioned in earlier blogs. They were so excited to see each other! He has been asking me at least once a week about his old friends at school and Raven is one specific person he asks about. Raven's mom said the same thing saying that Raven always asks about Damon. We of course swapped numbers and will plan a play date this coming week.

It was time to get the eggs and Damon was a little nervous with the amounts of kids that were there. He really didn't want to do it at first but grandma took him and then he got into it.
He came back with several eggs and we opened them to see what was inside...melted candy. :)

After a few hours in the sun and heat, we need some hydration and nourishment so we went out to eat with my parents. He fell asleep on the ride home...

Happy Easter!

Last night the Easter bunny made a special trip to Damon's house because he knew Damon would be at his dad's next weekend during Easter.

I slept on the couch so that I could make sure I was awake before Damon came out of his room. Seeing as we had a long day yesterday Damon didn't wake up until 8:15 this morning and I'm an early riser so there was plenty of time.

He came out of his room and was so excited about his basket. He ran over to it saying: "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!" Now the pictures look like he is not happy but he is...he just woke up and his eyes kept shutting because of the flash.

The theme for this years basket was arts and crafts which included: Play dough, Markers, Special Paper and Markers, Floss, Dinosaur Egg that hatches, M & M's, Snickers, Jelly Beans, and Bubble Chew. Last years theme was about health.

Damon looking through his classy basket...

Looking in the egg to see what goody is in there...jelly beans!

Damon is excited about his new dental floss! He keeps using mine so I figured it was time to get him some special ones.

Taking a hard look at all of the goodies.

Of course we had to get out the dough right away and start playing. Then we had breakfast on the back porch while throwing our eggs around.

We got a little bit of relaxing in before our Easter Egg hunt at Mecklenburg Park.
